DR RAFAEL CASTILLO

Dr Castillo, tirelessly supported by his charming wife Betty, has been the principal architect of the Association ever since he first conceptualized the idea of a Caribbean Association of Neurological Surgeons and brought it to fruition, and eventually to recognition by, and full membership of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies on 27th April 1973 .

Dr Castillo, known affectionately as Don Rafael within the association is also known as the Father of Venezuelan Neurosurgery. He is credited with creating the Chair of Neurosurgery in the Central University of his native Venezuela. His contributions to the development of Venezuelan Neurosurgery have been recognized with the award to him of the highest national honour bestowed upon a civilian by the State of Venezuela, ie the Order of Simon Bolivar - First Class.

AIMS OF THE C.A.N.S.

  1. To promote the development of Neurological Surgery in accordance with the standards of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies in the territories of the Caribbean through annual conferences and the exchange of ideas between members with the goal of improving the quality of neurosurgical care delivered to the inhabitants of the region.
  2. To promote and foster friendly relations between neurosurgeons in the different constituent territories.
  3. To expand the role of neurological surgery in the territories of the Caribbean and Central America through cooperation with other regional professional organisations.
  4. To stimulate and nurture interest in, and the development of neurological surgery in young medical graduates in the Caribbean and Central America.

CANS was founded in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic on 27 April 1973. In the Early 1970's a group of visionary and talented neurosurgeons working separately in different territories in the Caribbean were brought together as a result of an effort by Dr Rafael Castillo of Venezuela who traveled to several different countries, discussed the idea of a Caribbean Association and created it in 1972. Recognition by the World Federation followed one year later.

The Association holds an annual scientific conference in a different Caribbean territory each year and promotes the continual advancement of neurosurgical praciice in the Region.

The wives of members are an important part of the Association
